ARTIST BIO

Andy Warhol's (1928-1987) reflection on one of the most reproduced paintings in the history of art - Leonardo da Vinci's mural The Last Supper (1495-97) - is typical of his artistic work, in that it is not based on the original.

For this monumental cycle, which consists of around 100 individual works, he instead drew on reproductions, photographs, outline drawings and cheap plastic imitations such as are available world-wide and in myriad variations as decorative pieces for home interiors or as private devotional pictures. With the aid of this material, Warhol goes through his ambivalent and extremely multifaceted repertoire, working with his most important techniques, screen printing and painting, varying his formal use of series and fragments, and testing new possibilities of defining objects with colour.

Warhol combines iconographic set pieces from the "high" and "low" realms, the world of art and the world of commerce, treating them as equally valid sources.

Furthermore, in this series with its religious theme he works according to the same contentual principles he developed for his depiction of everyday (American) reality. In this way, a panorama emerges of Warhol on Warhol, and with it a portrait of an artistic personality who, like no other, made the mechanisms of perception and their traps, not to mention the problems of a contemporary definition of reality, his main themes.
