ABOUT THE ART

Andy Warhol's (1928-1987) collaboration with Playboy was a long-term professional relationship that culminated in his iconic, pop art-style redesign of the magazine's 'bunny' logo for its January 1986 "Holiday Anniversary" cover. The cover, based on a 1985 sketch, was one of Warhol's last major works before his death.

For the 35th-anniversary issue, Playboy commissioned Warhol to design the cover featuring the magazine's signature rabbit-head logo. Warhol created a brightly-colored, double-exposed serigraph of the bunny.  The Pop Art rendition elevated the familiar corporate logo to the status of a fine art icon, much like his previous works featuring Campbell's soup cans or Coca-Cola.

Beyond the most famous 1986 cover, Warhol was a beloved and regular contributor to Playboy for decades. His work included a self-portrait published in the magazine in 1974.

Andy Warhol's 'bunny' design has continued to be used by Playboy for various branded merchandise and products, including a line of vodka cocktails released in 2023. The enduring popularity and recognition of the artwork showcases the lasting cultural impact of the collaboration.
