ABOUT THE ART

Meguru Yamaguchi is known for his explosive, sculptural brushstroke style—an approach he describes as “sculpting paint.” His work blends traditional Japanese calligraphy influences with the energetic visual vocabulary of New York street culture. For the Oakley x Team USA project, Yamaguchi created a custom artwork that captures the dynamism, intensity, and motion of athletic performance. The sweeping strokes and splashes of color on this deck echo his signature cut-and-layered technique, giving the impression of movement blasted across the surface.

This artwork was selected by Oakley as part of its 2020 initiative to collaborate with contemporary artists whose styles embody athletic power and expression. Translating Yamaguchi’s three-dimensional brush structures onto a skateboard deck flattens the sculptural quality while highlighting the bold lines and saturated colors that define his aesthetic. The result is a functional art object that feels simultaneously kinetic and contemplative.

Because these decks were never commercially released, they’ve become sought-after collector’s items—especially among fans of Olympic memorabilia, Oakley collaborations, and contemporary Japanese painters. ARTIST BIO

Meguru Yamaguchi (b. 1984, Tokyo) is a Brooklyn-based contemporary artist celebrated for his dynamic, sculptural approach to painting—an aesthetic he describes as “cutting and pasting brushstrokes.” Growing up in a family that ran a hair salon, Yamaguchi was fascinated by the expressive potential of movement and line. This led him to develop a unique process that involves creating physical brushstrokes, cutting them apart, layering them, and reconstructing them into sweeping, three-dimensional compositions. His work blends traditional Japanese calligraphy, graffiti culture, and the visual intensity of New York street art.

After relocating to New York in 2007, Yamaguchi quickly became recognized in the contemporary art and fashion worlds. His collaborations span global brands such as Nike, Issey Miyake, Uniqlo, Oakley, and Levi’s, as well as major galleries and cultural institutions. Whether presented as large-scale murals, sculptural canvases, or digital forms, his pieces radiate energy, motion, and emotional impact—capturing what he calls the “soul of the brushstroke.”

Today, Meguru Yamaguchi is considered one of the leading figures bridging Japanese and American contemporary art. His work continues to explore the physicality of painting in the digital age, transforming the simple act of a brushstroke into a bold, sculptural statement of identity, movement, and cultural fusion.
